This piece just materialized. I wanted the focus to be on the trees, so the background colors have little connection to reality, which bothers me not a bit. I am finding myself increasingly gravitating toward bolder color palettes.

This piece, small for me at 16x20, was inspired by a photo that I took a number of years ago on a very misguided mission to find Hoodoos. I was totally and happily lost and got some wonderful photos, but never saw a Hoodoo. This piece will be a part of the Artists of Texas Show at The Dutch Art Gallery here in Dallas this fall.

This 3rd of the 2nd series represents a darker side of me. Same colors, but much more intense. Lots of impasto. I am almost finished with the final 3. They will be more Orange/yellow, but still in the same genre. I have been very pleased with the response I have received thus far.

Navajo Dreams...IV in series

This is the fourth piece in this series. They seem to come to me in sets of 3. I have finished 2 more that I will post soon. I varied the palette only slightly from the first 3. I think that each 3 works together quite well as a triptych. All are painted in multiple layers, heavily textured on 16x20 gallery wrap canvas. I have already belabored you with how much I love to paint big, so I will not dwell on that aspect. I love this painting. It flowed through me as if I was some kind of medium. I use this palette a lot, so that was not so different, but the composition and application of color was spontaneous and I have rarely felt this free in the process of painting. There was little hesitation. My studio mates provided input which was taken and I am so happy with this piece that I think it will become the first of a series. Thank you for viewing my blog.

The idea for this "triptych" has been percolating in my mind for some time.. It (they) are not finished, but almost. I am unsure as to marketing them as a trio or individually. I intend to put a resin on each one when I am done. I am also unsure as to signing them, because they can be placed in various positions. Advice is welcome. All of the Navaho Daydreams paintings are currently showing at the Dutch Art Gallery.

I haven't been putting in enough painting time of late. My bad. This is the latest incarnation of this painting. I totally changed the direction of the light source. I am liking it much better, but I still have a few tweaks to make. The source photo was taken west of Denver, I believe in Estes Park.

This painting is another result of just using my imagination and a palette knife. I wanted a strong exaggerated sense of light while using my favorite colors. After many revisions, I am happy with the results. Thank you for viewing my blog.

I am not sure this is improved. I spent most of the day working on her. Portraiture is not my strong suit. I lifted her nose about a half inch, worked with the shadows on the nose, adjusted the lips, added iridescent white to the eyelids and gave her some color as well as some beads in her hair. I need to put this aside and ponder this for a while and start something new. Comments welcome.

Updated version of an earlier post. I used a palette knife and huge gobs of impasto. I had a great time with this piece. It was inspired by my friend Kay Wynne's mother's old post card from long ago... Kay gave it to me, knowing that I love this palette.

I painted this still life a long time ago and donated it for some cause. I decided to do it again, this time bigger and without the crystal votive candle holder that no one could recognize. It was a challenge, trying to keep everything "blue" ish.

This painting was inspired by a photo that I took at Rancho de Chimayo. These pigeons were drinking from the stream that flows through there. I worked on it and could not get the impact that I was striving for, so I put it in the growing "contemplation" pile. I picked it up recently and made some additions and am overall pleased with the outcome.

I wonder if anyone remembers this cartoon? I was a cartoon watching fiend when I was a child and this was old even back then. It is about a family of owls. The mother owl is teaching her little owlettes to sing and play classical music, but this little guy wanted to sing jazz. The rest of the family was horrified and the little owl kept getting into trouble and ran away from home. He eventually got on the radio and sang his little ditty, "I want to singa... about the moona and the juna and the springa....." His family missed him back at home and were so excited to hear him that they started to dance to his song. This silly cartoon really resonates with me and it was fun to paint. SOLD

I am entering my grandma(Womp) as my first entry into my blog. She died a few months ago, and I wanted to paint her. I only had one old sepia photo of her as a young woman and decided to use that as a jumping off point. She was quite a character. She was my caretaker before I was school age and took me pick okra one time to "make some money". I have no idea how old I was, but I remember the okra plants looked like a forest to me. We got up at the crack of dawn and worked until lunch. I remember that the dew rendered my ragged and huge cotton gloves useless against the spiny texture of this dubious vegetable. At noon, we went to collect what i expected to be a windfall of cash. It turned out to be a few coins. I don't know if she was trying to teach me a lesson, but I learned one nonetheless. I decided I never wanted to do that again and would without question, go to college. I hate okra to this day.

I called her "Womp" because I was the first grandchild and apparently could not say "Grandma". The name stuck with the subsequent horde of grandchildren and great grandchildren that were to follow with frightening frequency. Until her recent health issues, she quite robust and would cook every Sunday for the whole family and was the glue that held this immense and diverse family together. She was a child of the depression and a great raconteur. Her stories sometimes had little or no truth to them, but she was always a hoot. We were never quite sure how old she was.
